Electrofusion & Buttfusion Welding
Heartland Pipelines’ Welding Services deliver expert electrofusion and buttfusion welding for polyethylene (PE) pipes, vital for water and gas networks across the UK.
Electrofusion Welding
Electrofusion welding is a method used to join thermoplastic pipes, commonly polyethylene (PE), using specialized fittings with built-in electric heating elements. When an electric current is applied, the heating elements melt the inside of the fitting and the outer surface of the pipe. This creates a strong, homogeneous joint once cooled. Electrofusion is ideal for confined spaces and where high precision is needed, such as gas and water pipelines.
Key Features:
-
Uses fittings with embedded heating coils.
-
Precise control over heat and fusion time.
-
Suitable for repairs and installations in tight or difficult locations.
Butt Fusion Welding
Butt fusion welding involves heating the ends of two pipes and then pressing them together to form a continuous, leak-proof joint. The pipe ends are aligned in a fusion machine, heated with a hot plate until they reach melting point, then joined under pressure and allowed to cool. This method is commonly used for high-pressure applications like water mains and industrial pipelines.
Key Features:
-
No need for additional fittings.
-
Produces a strong, permanent bond.
-
Best suited for straight runs and larger diameter pipes.
