Ductile Iron Pipeline Installed by Horizontal Directional Drilling

Utility fusion welding large diameter pipes

Heartland Pipelines was one of the first companies in the UK to successfully install a ductile iron (DI) pipeline using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) – a landmark project that demonstrated our ability to deliver complex, innovative trenchless installations.

The challenge

Ductile iron offers exceptional strength and longevity for high-pressure water mains, but its weight and jointing make it far more challenging to install by HDD than conventional polyethylene pipe. Completing a DI installation trenchlessly required careful bore design, accurate steering and close control of the pull-back.

The solution

Our experienced drilling teams designed and executed the bore, managing ground conditions and pull-back forces to install the ductile iron main with minimal surface disruption – avoiding the extensive excavation that open-cut installation would have required.

The result

A successful, durable ductile iron pipeline installed by HDD, and a capability that continues to set Heartland Pipelines apart for demanding water infrastructure projects. Explore our ductile iron HDD service.
