Trenchless Directional Drilling & HDD Across the Midlands & UK

Drilling rig with barriers

Heartlands Pipeline Ltd’s Directional Drilling division is a leader in trenchless technology, delivering expert Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) solutions for utility installations nationwide. Our HDD techniques enable the installation of pipelines and ducting with minimal surface disruption, making them ideal for crossings beneath roads, rivers, and environmentally sensitive areas.

As pioneers in the industry, we were one of the first companies to successfully install a ductile iron pipeline using HDD, showcasing our ability to handle complex and innovative projects. With our latest drilling equipment, we can now also drill through rock, allowing us to complete installations in even the most challenging ground conditions.

Our experienced teams work closely with clients to ensure all installations meet their exact standards and project specifications. With teams available to work nationwide, we provide reliable and efficient utilities HDD solutions for water, sewer, electric, and communication infrastructure, ensuring every project is completed to the highest quality.

Trenchless (no-dig) utility installation using HDD Technology across the UK

Often the quickest and most cost effective method of underground utility installation available, Heartland Pipelines offer an extensive range of Trenchless Technologies from Directional Drilling / Boring, Pipe Bursting and Sliplining to simple moling operations. We can install Water, Gas, Electric Ducting and Mains upto 630mm in diameter for lengths of up to 500m at a time. – Robert. E. (Managing Director).

    Heartland Pipelines: Directional Drilling Contractors

Heartland Pipelines is a specialist directional drilling contractor delivering trenchless (no-dig) pipe, duct and cable installation across the Midlands and nationwide. Since 2011 we have been the recognised “go-to” team for complex Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) projects, including road, rail and river crossings, and we were one of the first companies in the UK to install a ductile iron pipeline using HDD.

    HDD Capability & Specifications

    STW-approved principal contractor

We install water, gas, electric ducting, sewer and communications infrastructure using guided, steered drilling that keeps surfaces, roads and ecologically sensitive areas intact.

    Our HDD Process

    Survey & design

Site investigation, utility/ground surveys and a planned bore path designed around obstacles and constraints.

    Pilot bore

A steered pilot hole is drilled along the design path, tracked for accurate depth and alignment.

    Ream & pull-back

The bore is enlarged by back-reaming and the product pipe or duct is pulled through in a single operation.

    Test & reinstate

Pressure testing, chlorination where required, and full site reinstatement on completion.

    Specialist Crossings

    Road & carriageway crossings

Install services beneath busy highways with no road closure and minimal traffic disruption.

    Rail & under-track crossings

Network Rail-compliant crossings beneath live railway lines without disrupting services.

    River & canal crossings

Deep, accurate crossings beneath watercourses to protect banks, habitats and flow.

    Environmentally Sensitive Sites

Trenchless HDD is ideal where the surface must be protected. We regularly work around Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), conservation areas, ancient woodland and other sensitive habitats, installing utilities with minimal surface disturbance and a smaller carbon footprint than open-cut excavation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is horizontal directional drilling (HDD)?

Horizontal directional drilling is a trenchless method of installing underground pipes, ducts and cables along a steered, pre-planned bore path. A pilot hole is drilled, enlarged by reaming, and the product pipe is pulled back through it - all without open-cut trenching, so roads, rivers and sensitive ground stay intact.

What diameters and lengths can you drill?

Heartland Pipelines installs pipes and ducts up to 630mm in diameter and can complete single drill shots of up to 500m, depending on ground conditions and the utility being installed.

    Can you drill through rock?

Yes. With our latest drilling equipment we have in-house rock drilling capability and can complete installations in challenging ground conditions, including rock, that many contractors cannot.

How is HDD different from open-cut excavation?

HDD installs services underground without digging a continuous open trench. That means no road closures in most cases, far less surface disruption and reinstatement, faster installation, lower environmental impact, and the ability to cross under roads, railways and rivers.

What utilities can be installed using HDD?

We install water mains, sewers, gas and electric ducting, and communications infrastructure for water companies, Tier 1 contractors, developers and local authorities.

Do you carry out road, rail and river crossings?

Yes - specialist crossings are a core strength. We deliver carriageway crossings with no road closure, Network Rail-compliant under-track crossings, and deep crossings beneath rivers and canals.

    Where do you work?

We are based in Telford, Shropshire and work throughout the Midlands and across the UK, predominantly for Severn Trent Water and its principal/Tier 1 contractors, as well as developers and other utilities.

Can you work near environmentally sensitive areas?

Yes. Trenchless HDD is ideal for SSSIs, conservation areas, ancient woodland and watercourses, allowing utilities to be installed with minimal surface disturbance and habitat impact.

    What accreditations do you hold?

Heartland is an STW-approved Tier 1 contractor and holds WIRS/WaterSafe accreditation for self-lay water networks, UKAS certification and ISO 14001 environmental certification.

How do I get a quote for a directional drilling project?

Call 01952 260505 or use our contact form with as much project detail as possible (location, utility, diameter, length and ground conditions) and our team will provide a no-obligation quotation.
